Opal Dean Gay
Opal Dean Gay, lifelong resident of Laurens County, passed away Thursday, September 6, 2018 at her home following a brief illness.
Born February 2, 1933 to Lonzie and Dollie Foskey of Minter, Georgia, Opal graduated from Condor High School in 1949 and married James Ollon Gay on August 7, 1950. In 1951, “Ollon” accepted the call of pastor and she found her life’s work. She was a lifelong pastor’s wife to the many members they pastored throughout the years. She led countless prayer groups, Bible Studies and women’s groups. In 1982, along with her husband, they founded Eastside Baptist Church in eastern Laurens County. Together, they pastored this church until his passing in 2000. Until her recent illness, she still served as a cornerstone within the congregation. In 1989, she went to work with her son, Phil, at his State Farm Office in Soperton to help him open the business. She was the face of his front office from this time until her retirement in February
of 2015.
Opal was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 49 years, James Ollon Gay. She is survived by two sons, Phil (Wynona) Gay and Tim (Debbie) Gay; four grandchildren, Krista (Matt) Anderson, Dustin (Rachel) Gay, Brandon Gay and Dillon (Carla) Gay and finally three great granddaughters, Riley Anderson, Sara Beth Gay and Liza Gay. She also leaves behind a beloved caregiver, Mrs. Runell Hood.
Funeral Services will be held at Eastside Baptist Church on Sunday, September 9, 2018 at 2:00PM with Reverend Dwayne Clements, Brother Jeff Handley and Reverend Curtis Warnock officiating. Burial will be in the Minter Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:00PM to 8:00PM Saturday, September 8, 2018 at Eastside Baptist Church. The family will gather at the home of Matt and Krista Anderson.
Pallbearers will be Brandon Gay, Dillon Gay, Dustin Gay, Heath Foskey, Reece Foskey and Tommy Wood.
The family would like to express our thanks for the wonderful care given by Serenity Hospice during her illness.
